We Fix Green Pools

No this isn’t a St Pattys day picture, green pool season started early this year. Our week started with a call of an abandoned home in an HOA we serve with a mosquito problem. When we arrived we found a pool that hadn’t had any circulation in what appeared to be a very long time and was moving with mosquito larvae. After 16 gallons of liquid chlorine, and some time to soak, we can finally see the bottom and its free of mosquito larvae. We’ll continue to watch it until someone gets some power turned back on at which time we can clean it back up!

No Shortage of green!

No we’re not referring to those crispy bills we all like to keep in our pockets with dead presidents on them. This year is shaping up to be one of the worst years for green pools we can remember. With all the wind storms we’ve had its led to clogged pipes and eventually green pools. Now with temps soaring into the 100’s and our wonderful UV index of 10+ your pool can and usually does go green in no time. Sometimes just a few hours!

Last Tuesday we received a call from a customer in Green Valley who’s pool was “a little green”. He was an elderly man and taking care of his own pool and it had just gotten out of hand. The skimmers, pump, and filter was completely plugged. That combined with no chlorine led to this:

This pool was too far gone to bring it back. Cyuranic acid levels off the charts and a thick, green coating over much of the walls and floor. We informed the customer the only solution was a full drain, pressure wash, chlorine bath, and a refill / balance .

First we drained, pressure washed and gave the pool a good chlorine bath:

And today after the pool had been refilled we fired up the pump and its time to balance the chemicals:

When CYA doesn’t mean what you think it does…Cyanuric Acid

Here in Arizona we are blessed with lots and lots (and lots) of sunshine and we love our pools. Whether your pool is Salt water or you have an old fashioned floater in it, or both, your pools main protection from harmful bacteria and algae is chlorine. Chlorine, whether generated by your salt generator or from a jug is quickly degraded by the sun. So fast, in fact our Arizona sun can wipe out 75-90% of the chlorine in just two hours. That means half your chlorine is gone in as little as 45 minutes! The good (and bad) news is in 1956 Cyanuric acid was discovered!

CYA is a double edged sword

Cyanuric acid, also referred to as conditioner or stabilizer, protects chlorine from the sun and slows the chlorine burn off from the sun. Thats great so more is better right? The answer is unfortunately no. As CYA levels climb it begins to weaken the chlorine\’s ability to work and it takes more and more chlorine to keep a pool clean and sparkling.

Why does my CYA level keep rising?

Every chlorine tablet and most shocks contain Cyuranic acid also referred to as stabilized chlorine. Every time these products are used to sanitize the pool it adds a little more to the pool. The more a pool is used the more chlorine is added, and the faster the CYA level rises. CYA doesn\’t evaporate and is only removed when water is removed which is the only sure way to remove it.

What can I do keep it from rising so fast?

Introduce fresh water regularly. This can be in the form of back washing if you have a sand filter or pumping water out while introducing fresh water. Ultimately, however you are doing the same thing draining a pool will do. Some of our commercial customers drain their pools several times a year to keep CYA at bay. Residential pools however vary. Pools that aren\’t used much often can go as long as 4 years. Others, who use their pools a lot may be as short as 1 year.

Whats the bottom line?

If you have an outdoor pool, and you live in Arizona, Cyanuric acid is your friend, most of the time. Stabilized chlorine is still king when it comes to protecting your pool, and the swimmers from things that wish to harm us. We all change the oil on our cars because over time the oil gets dirty and the filter can\’t get it out. Swimming pools in Arizona are very much the same. Every 1-4 years you need to plan on giving your swimming pool an \”oil change\”. Anyone who tells you differently is either trying to sell you more chemicals in the form of algaecides, chlorine, or they simply don\’t know what they are talking about. In closing, If your having trouble keeping your water clear, or you have algae, and the chlorine levels are fine, you can bet you have high CYA and its time to give your pool and oil change.

$60.00 per month weekly pool service?

Well its that time of year again. Seasons are changing, snowbirds are coming back, and along with them we\’ve been seeing a lot more pool poles dangling out of the back of beat up trucks trying to make a quick buck. To be clear from the start we don\’t have anything against legitimate new startups, heck we were one at one time!

Our first fully operational pool truck

On a recent visit with a potential client we quoted her a price of $150 per month for our elite service package and her jaw just dropped. She was visibly taken aback. “Wow, you’re really expensive!” she said. So we ask her what she’s currently paying. “Sixty dollars a month,” she said.

“Well, how do you like it?” we asked. She shrugged her shoulders and didn’t say much. “So why are you looking to switch to a new service company?”

It was like a light switch went off. She started rattling off a bunch of things: “They don’t show up regularly, my pool turns green all the time, they don’t ever answer the phone, they’re only here for a couple of minutes a visit…”

“Well,” we said, “That’s the kind of service you can expect for $60 a month.”

We see this again and again in the pool service industry — people trying to pay peanuts for quality service. And they seem genuinely surprised when it doesn’t work out.

Let’s take a look at why $60/month pool service is a bad idea, not only from your point of view, but also from a licensed, bonded and insurance pool companies view.

The homeowners perspective:

Initially your going to be happy paying $60 a month. (At least, you are at first.) But at the same time, your expecting the pool guy to do pretty much everything. Being in Green Valley we have countless clients who have bad knees or other health issues and have a hard time cleaning out the baskets in between our visits, so during the windy times of the year, or monsoon storms, we drive over there and empty it for them to help eliminate equipment problems. That’s something we\’re able to do because we\’re priced right.

Even if we make an extra stop out of the week here and there, We\’re still going to make something whereas $60/month services are just not. You pay us because you want us to take care of everything. You call with questions, you send emails, there’s all kinds of things expected of us, and if we’re priced right and not doing a million pools a day, we can give you the time you deserve.

Going back to the customer we gave the estimate to — she continued to list off a bunch of issues with her service company, all of which we could solve with our service, which is why our service requires a larger investment. You really get what you pay for in this industry, and we always explain to potential customers the pitfalls of hiring someone \”on the cheap\” and 99% of the time we are right. The other 1% of the time whoever the homeowner ultimately hired almost immediately raised the rate. The math simply never works out in the homeowners favor in the end.

From a licensed, bonded, and insured pool companies perspective:

To put it bluntly, $60/month is just not sustainable.

There’s 4.3 weeks per month, on average, but for this example we’ll just use four weeks as a baseline. Sixty dollars a month from a customer means we\’re getting $15 a stop. That’s before anything else comes into play, like the costs of gas, vehicle maintenance, equipment, wages, workman\’s comp insurance, liability insurance, commercial vehicle insurance, chemicals, taxes…the list goes on. Operating as a legitimate, legal, and insured business, we can expect to take about 75% off the top of our revenue to cover basic expenses.

So now we\’re down to $3.75 per home serviced. If we’re spending 15-30 minutes at a stop — which is the time it takes to do quality work — the company is making $7.50 an hour and that doesn\’t even include travel time between homes and only if there’s nothing wrong with the pools we visit. Here in Arizona, which the vast majority of pools are uncovered, making some stops require even more time.

To sustain this we would have to do a lot more pools to make any profits. Each of our techs would have to do 30 or more pools a day just to make any kind of money and stay in business. And because they’re doing so many pools, they don’t have time to dedicate to the clients that call with a question or they need to stop by because their vacuum is not working properly.

Our clients really expect to have everything taken out of their hands so all they need to do is enjoy their pool — why else are they paying for service?

Things to look for (and ask) when hiring a pool company

Google is your friend. Research the company or individual.
Ask if they have the most basic things like a general liability insurance and commercial vehicle insurance.
